Job Description:
The Senior Vice President, Legal Software will lead the Legal Solutions software portfolio across multiple lines of business. This executive leader will drive product strategy, roadmap, innovation, and lifecycle governance to build and deliver cutting-edge solutions that address the evolving needs of the legal industry. This role will oversee AI Platform and Innovation strategy (including the “Knowledge Worker Factory”), the Epiq Service Cloud, the creation and growth of integrated software suites for each Legal Solutions business, and the transformation of the quote-to-cash process to achieve software growth targets. Additionally, the SVP will co-lead the annual operating plan process in partnership with Sales and Finance to set and achieve software growth targets.
Product Management & Strategy
Own end-to-end product vision and roadmap for the Legal Solutions software portfolio, applying Pragmatic Framework best practices.
Lead cross-functional product management teams to identify market problems, define product requirements, and prioritize features that deliver clear customer value and differentiate the software in the marketplace.
Ensure product strategy aligns with broader company goals, financial targets, and innovation mandates.
Product Lifecycle Governance
Establish and maintain comprehensive governance over each product’s lifecycle - from concept and design through launch, growth, and sunset.
Build on the current Product Lifecycle Governance (PLG) process by leveraging Zone to Win, Playing to Win, and The Innovator’s Dilemma principles - guiding growth, adjacency, and disruptive innovation strategies.
Enforce the PLG process across all software products and suites, whether directly managed by the SVP, Legal Software or by other Legal Solutions business leaders, to ensure consistency, quality, and alignment with strategic objectives.
Implement standardized processes and milestones, ensuring alignment with the Pragmatic Framework’s guidelines and gate reviews. Conduct monthly reviews of software suite performance.
Epiq Service Cloud
Oversee the strategic vision and execution of the Epiq Service Cloud as the primary deployment platform for Legal Solutions software suites.
Foster collaboration with R&D, IT/Operations, Security, and Customer Success teams to ensure a robust, scalable platform that meets stringent regulatory and data privacy requirements.
AI Platform & Innovation
Lead the strategy and roadmap for AI-driven legal solutions and the Knowledge Worker Factory, focusing on automation, data analytics, and advanced machine learning capabilities.
Deliver agentic legal applications and workflows as part of the Legal Solutions software suites, unlocking next-level value for the Knowledge Worker Factory.
Create an Innovation Zone within the Epiq Service Cloud for co-innovation driven rapid prototyping, user testing, and iterative design of AI-based solutions to accelerate time to market.
Partner with R&D and innovation teams to incubate, pilot, and scale new technologies that enhance productivity and generate new software revenue streams.
Creation and Growth of Legal Solutions Software Suites
Direct the formation and ongoing management process for software suites, each supporting a distinct Legal Solutions business. Maximize software and platform re-use to expand software gross margin.
Collaborate with product leaders, architects, and go-to-market teams to ensure each suite has a clear value proposition, cohesive user experience, and market-leading differentiation.
Governance of the Quote-to-Cash Process
Establish and lead cross-functional governance involving Product, Sales, Marketing, Finance, Operations, and Customer Success to streamline pricing, packaging, quoting, and contract execution for all Legal Solutions software.
Drive the transformation of Legal Solutions software financial performance by adopting Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) as the primary software growth KPI, ensuring software in each of the software suites is aligned with the respective Legal Solutions business.
Track and optimize performance metrics (e.g., conversion rates, revenue, time-to-close) to continuously improve operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Annual Operating Plan (AOP) & Sales Interlock
Collaborate with Finance and Sales leadership to develop an annual operating plan that sets clear software growth targets and revenue milestones.
Define and execute Growth Sales Plays in collaboration with Marketing and Sales for each of the Legal Solutions software suites, ensuring accountability for results and ongoing pipeline health.
Provide regular updates to executive leadership on progress, opportunities, and risks for achieving AOP targets.
Leadership Development (Thayer Approach)
Embed Thayer Leadership principles within the Legal Software organization, creating a culture of disciplined execution, continuous learning, and accountability.
Hire, train, mentor, and coach the Legal Software team, ensuring best-in-class expertise and professional development.
Mentor and coach cross-functional governance process team leaders, fostering collaboration and alignment across multiple business units and functions.
Implement After-Action Reviews (AARs) as a structured learning mechanism, empowering teams to reflect on successes, identify lessons learned, and drive continuous improvement.
Utilize Thayer Leadership tools (e.g., mission planning frameworks, leadership self-assessments, team alignment exercises) to develop high-performing, self-empowered teams.
Encourage a consistent leadership mindset throughout the organization, ensuring all team members—from managers to individual contributors—are equipped to lead and drive results.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (MBA, JD, or relevant technical degree) strongly preferred.
15+ years of progressive leadership experience in software product management, product marketing, or related roles within the legal, technology, or professional services sectors.
Demonstrated success implementing or working within the Pragmatic Framework or a similarly recognized product management methodology.
Technical & Industry Expertise
Proven background in SaaS, cloud platforms, and emerging technologies such as AI/ML—ideally in highly regulated industries.
Deep understanding of the legal services ecosystem, including eDiscovery, document review, contract management, or other legal workflow software.
Strategic Leadership
Track record of successfully managing complex product portfolios, aligning technology roadmaps with corporate strategy, and driving revenue growth.
Demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate at all levels of an organization, from executives to cross-functional teams.
Operational & Financial Acumen
Strong background in product lifecycle management, from initial concept and market validation to go-to-market strategies and sunset plans.
Experience setting and meeting annual operating plan targets, partnering with Sales, and Marketing on pipeline forecasts and growth initiatives.
Change Management & Collaboration
Exceptional communication skills to rally cross-functional teams (Product, Sales, Marketing, Operations, Finance, R&D, etc.) around common goals.
Ability to lead transformation initiatives, both strategic (e.g., new suite creation) and operational (e.g., quote-to-cash governance).
Leadership Development
Familiarity with or direct experience applying Thayer Leadership principles and tools.
Successful track record of implementing After Action Reviews or similar continuous improvement practices to build a learning organization.
Demonstrated ability to hire, train, and coach high-performing teams.
