Job Title: Litigation Paralegal

Job Function: The Litigation Paralegal serves as a key legal operations professional within MATA’s Legal Department, providing advanced litigation and claims support across employment, personal injury, contract, and regulatory matters. This role independently manages litigation files, coordinates discovery and records production, and supports risk mitigation efforts tied to MATA’s public transit operations. The position requires demonstrated litigation experience, strong judgment, and the ability to operate with minimal supervision in a highly regulated public-sector environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Litigation Management & Legal Support
- Independently manage active litigation files from intake through resolution
- Maintain case calendars, monitor court deadlines, and ensure timely filings and responses
- Draft and prepare litigation-related documents, including discovery responses, subpoenas, affidavits, notices, and correspondence
- Coordinate document production and e-discovery with internal departments and outside counsel
- Prepare trial binders, exhibit lists, and hearing materials
Claims & Risk Exposure Support
- Support management of personal injury, property damage, and liability claims arising from transit operations
- Collect and organize incident reports, surveillance footage, maintenance records, and employee statements
- Serve as a liaison with insurance carriers, third-party administrators, and risk management partners
- Maintain claims databases, settlement documentation, and status reporting
Employment & Labor Litigation
- Support employment-related litigation, grievances, arbitrations, and administrative agency matters (e.g., EEOC)
- Assist in internal investigations by organizing witness statements, disciplinary records, and supporting documentation
- Coordinate records production related to personnel actions, labor disputes, and compliance reviews
Public Sector & Regulatory Support
- Assist with subpoenas, public records requests, and regulatory inquiries
- Organize legal documentation related to audits, oversight reviews, and compliance matters impacting MATA
- Support records retention and document control protocols consistent with public-sector requirements
Legal Operations & Department Support
- Manage processing services, legal correspondence, and court communications
- Maintain legal databases, tracking tools, and case status reports
- Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, external counsel, courts, and vendors
- Recommend process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce legal risk
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Associate’s degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, or related field
- Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program preferred
- Minimum of 3–5 years of litigation paralegal experience
- Demonstrated experience supporting civil litigation, discovery, and case management
- Strong working knowledge of legal terminology, court procedures, and deadlines
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office and document management systems
- Excellent written communication, organization, and attention to detail
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a government agency, public authority, or public transit environment
- Experience supporting employment litigation, personal injury claims, or insurance defense matters
- Familiarity with public records laws and regulatory compliance
- Experience coordinating with outside counsel and insurance carriers
