Job Summary

This position located in Charlotte, NC will support the litigation attorney in the Office of General Counsel and other duties as needed.  Job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Responsibilities

  • Assist with varying litigation and pre-litigation legal matters including commercial matters, environmental matters, personal injury,  condemnations, contract disputes, labor and employment matters, class actions and other legal matters;
  • Draft and review complex legal documents and discovery responses under the supervision of an attorney, in an accurate, complete, and timely manner;
  • Investigate facts related to litigation and pre-litigation legal matters and gather documents from existing files, electronic media, and through inquiries of various departments throughout the company; interview company employees regarding litigated and pre-litigated legal matters; organize and coordinate information that has been gathered;
  • Prepare case summaries, reporting entries, and PowerPoint presentations necessary for updating Board of Directors, senior leadership, auditors, and internal clients;
  • Attend meetings with outside counsel, clients, and other internal stakeholders to ensure up to date knowledge of litigated and pre-litigated matters;
  • Review, proofread, and cite check various legal documents before submission and compile exhibits;
  • Tracking and updating various metrics and reporting using Excel, Teams and other tools;
  • Track and manage dockets and procedural deadlines to ensure timely responses;
  • Conduct legal research, review applicable legal principles and precedent, and draft memoranda, charts, or other documents with attention to detail using research software (i.e., Lexis Advance) and web-based research tools;
  • Preparation and execution of legal hold custodian notices, collection requests, custodial interviews and other e-Discovery related tasks;
  • Assist and collaborate with outside counsel and paralegals, as needed;
  • Develop and maintain SharePoint sites and Microsoft Team sites, including SFTP sites or other electronic media, as needed;
  • Interact with members of management, in-house attorneys, clients, and other team members in a respectful and professional manner;
  • Initiate and complete assigned projects as instructed and with a sense of urgency;
  • Ability to appropriately handle highly confidential and proprietary information; and
  • Assist attorneys with other related assignments.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or paralegal certificate
  • In lieu of bachelor's degree or paralegal certificate, high school diploma/GED AND seven (7) years minimum of experience with an in-house legal department or law firm AND in the process of obtaining a bachelor’s degree or paralegal certificate within a reasonable amount of time (must be completed by 2 years of hire).

Desired Qualifications

  • Paralegal Degree or Bachelor’s Degree;  
  • Experience with complex litigation case management; and
  • Experience with eDiscovery cycle and review.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of computer applications, specifically Microsoft office products such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint;
  • Experience with drafting legal documents; and
  • Experience in conducting legal research and in using web-based research tools.
  • At least 5 years related experience as a paralegal at a law firm or in a corporate legal department handling complex litigated and pre-litigated matters;
  • Familiarity with applicable NC, SC State and Federal Rules of Court and Evidence;
  • Regulated industry or utility experience;
  • Proficient with Lexis Nexis and/or WestLaw legal research tools, including PACER;
  • Demonstrated clear, concise, and effective written and oral communications skills, including an emphasis on grammar and formatting;
  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage numerous litigation and pre-litigation matters, reporting obligations, and other assigned tasks in an efficient and streamlined fashion;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team environment;
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, adaptability, and flexibility in handling multiple tasks, often under time constraints while taking direction from attorneys and clients;
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize, and coordinate work while being proactive, taking initiative, and exhibiting sound judgment;
  • Demonstrated problem solving, decision making and analytical skills;
  • Holds oneself accountable for complete, accurate, and timely work results, both independently and as part of a team;
  • Exercises professional judgment, integrity, respect, and professionalism; and
  • Notary Public.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the posted reporting location.
