As the Senior Legal Counsel for Competition India, you will be part of India legal Team and global Competition law team.

Expectations for the role include:

  • providing expert guidance on Indian competition laws, offering legal and strategic advice to business,
  • managing competition law risks proactively and supporting in setting the right business contractual frameworks.
  • creating, rolling out and providing training sessions on competition law topics to business
  • ensuring compliance with laws and regulatory requirements across all commercial and non-commercial operations
  • Support M&A deals having regulatory compliance requirements from Competition law perspective India and or Global

The role will require you to collaborate closely with a dynamic legal team as well as with commercial stakeholders to work on pan-India legal projects to provide subject matter expert support on important and novel issues and to help shape strategies and improve internal processes.

This is a newly created position, reporting into the India Territory General Counsel, offering you the opportunity to shape and define the role and contribute to the development and success of the competition law team.  This position also works in close co-ordination and alignment with the global competition law legal team and has a dotted line into the Global Head of Competition law.

Role & Responsibilities: 

-Lead on competition law matters to India legal and operational teams, advising on all kinds of competition law topics with focus on complex behavioral issues.

-Responsible for managing and analyzing competition related matters and queries from legal and operational teams in India and globally.

-Manage interactions with India competition law authorities (CCI), including responding to information requests and other regulatory inquiries as well as overseeing investigations and enforcement.

- Identify risks and provide clear and practical competition law advice to all stakeholders.

-Conduct Antitrust law self-assessment checks and be able to drive remediation measure.

- Participate as a subject matter expert in strategic projects bridging the gap between commercial and legal requirements.

- Assist with further development and implementation of the global competition law programme, controls and processes.

- Create and deliver internal Antitrust law trainings and drive communication road map related to Antitrust law compliance topics across the Organization.

-Identify and anticipate regulatory or policy developments and ensure relevant adaptation of internal programs and processes.

- Contribute to the cross-functional role of the competition law team by collaborating across teams and regions.

Requirements:

- Law degree from a reputed university. An LLM degree with a focus in competition law would be advantageous.

- Overall minimum 10+ years post qualification experience and preferably at least 5 years’ experience at a Tier 1 law firm in India and/or with a global legal team as in-house counsel dealing with competition law topics specifically.

- Strong English communication skills, written and verbal. Working knowledge of a language other than English is a plus.

- Experience in international work environments and multi-jurisdictional practice dealing with both India and preferably EU level laws and regulators.

- Significant exposure to advising clients in all kinds of competition matters including basic and highly complex and novel matters, dawn raids.  

- Experience in steering / managing on projects and cross functional teams.

- Fluent in relevant IT tools, Microsoft applications and be able to ideate digital solutions for e-discovery etc.

- Strong commercial and strategic mindset combined with integrity and a pro-active and responsible approach to the role of an in-house counsel.

- Strong analytic skills to identify risk, evaluate associated risk mitigation actions and clearly summarize complex topics and needs.

- Ability to take commercially sound decisions with a risk-based approach.

- Curious and investigative approach to matters, daring to ask the right questions and look into details.

- Capacity to find creative solutions and balance flexibility with risks

- Ability to work independently

- Collaborative approach working closely together with stakeholders from legal, operational and management.

- Interested in understanding our business and developing relationships with people from all levels of legal and operational teams. Demonstrated ability to influence and work effectively with global teams at all levels (including senior leadership) within a highly matrixed organization.

- Willing to be part of an expanding team with lots of potential development and responsibilities.

- High level of professionalism and emotional intelligence

- Ability to prioritize tasks, deadlines, and risks.
