OVERVIEW OF POSITION / DEPARTMENT
The Support Specialist Supervisor oversees and manages the daily operations of the Support Specialists across multiple bureaus and divisions.
This role requires excellent leadership, organizational skills, and the ability to manage diverse teams effectively. The Supervisor serves as the primary liaison between Support Specialists and their respective command staff, ensuring that bureau and division-specific needs are met and that Support Specialists operate efficiently and cohesively.
In addition to supervisory responsibilities, this is a dual role where the Supervisor continues to fulfill their current duties as a Support Specialist. This unique combination ensures a deep understanding of day-to-day operations while providing effective leadership and support to the team.
This position demands the utmost confidentiality, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. The Supervisor is also responsible for training, evaluating, and mentoring the Support Specialists to uphold the highest standards of performance and professionalism.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
In addition to their duties as a Support Specialist, the supervisor will:
Supervise and provide direct support to various Support Specialists, ensuring consistent performance and accountability.
Facilitate, coordinate, and monitor the work activities of the Support Specialists.
Serve as the point of contact for resolving conflicts, addressing operational issues, and facilitating communication between units.
Develop and implement processes to streamline workflow and ensure timely completion of tasks.
Oversee scheduling and coordination of internal and external needs for unit-specific requirements and group meetings.
Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures across all divisions.
Provide training, mentorship, and performance evaluations for Support Specialists.
Facilitate cross-training opportunities to build versatility and enhance skill sets within the team.
Identify and address developmental needs, creating plans for continuous improvement.
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, including internal investigations, disciplinary actions, and personnel matters.
Monitor and reconcile division-specific purchases, invoices, and budget tracking.
Ensure proper documentation and record-keeping practices are followed by all Support Specialists.
Prepare regular updates and reports for senior leadership.
Facilitate communication between sections and senior leadership to ensure alignment with departmental goals.
Attend meetings as required and provide recommendations for process improvements.
Provides additional complex administrative support.
Other duties as needed or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
Education:
· High school diploma or GED
Experience:
· At least 2 years of experience as a Support Specialist in a Police department
Preferred Qualifications:
· At least 1 year experience as a lead.
· Experience working with diverse units and familiarity with law enforcement support operations.

Basic Supervisory Certification (completed withing 6 months of hire)
Defensive Driving completed through COA (completed within 6 months of hire)
Notary Certificate (completed within 6 months of hire)

· Occasional Standing/Walking- Occurs up to 31 minutes to 2.5 hours per shift.
Essential Personnel:
· When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:
Medium work that involves moving no more than 40 pounds with or without assistance at a time
Frequent lifting, carrying, walking, and standing.
Hand/eye coordination to operate computer keyboard.
Vision to read and interpret reports, documents, and other written information.
Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
Work Environment:
· Works primarily in clean, comfortable office/cubicle environment with shared equipment
Equipment Used:
Frequently uses computer keyboard and telephone, fax machines, and copier.
This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
