Position Summary

The Senior Lead – Messaging Services is responsible for managing, designing, and optimizing the enterprise email and messaging infrastructure. This role ensures the reliability, security, and compliance of messaging platforms and provides technical leadership for strategic initiatives such as Exchange EOL/EOS decommissioning, email address transformation, and M365 compliance posture enhancements.

The position requires deep technical expertise in Microsoft Exchange (On-prem & Online), Office 365 Purview, Proofpoint, and related security services. The successful candidate will lead complex projects, mentor junior staff, and act as the technical lead during major incidents impacting messaging services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain enterprise messaging platforms including Microsoft Exchange Server, Exchange Online, and Proofpoint.
  • Manage compliance and governance configurations in Office 365 Purview (retention, auditing, DLP, eDiscovery, information protection).
  • Ensure system reliability, performance optimization, and adherence to security and compliance requirements.
  • Oversee hybrid Exchange environments and integration with Azure AD and Microsoft 365 services.
  • Lead projects for migrations, upgrades, and modernization of messaging and collaboration tools.
  • Collaborate with Information Security and Compliance teams to align messaging infrastructure with regulatory standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues related to email flow, routing, transport rules, and spam/phishing protection.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior administrators and support engineers.
  • Drive strategic initiatives:
    • Email Address Transformation and Routing Simplification, including remediation of vulnerabilities.
    • M365 Privileged Access Controls Posture Enhancements.
    • Global engineering lead for Microsoft Purview eDiscovery, coordinating with Legal/eDiscovery teams.
    • Exchange EOL/EOS decommissioning and litigation hold transitions for 1,400+ partner mailboxes.
    • Critical infrastructure upgrades, including Exchange SE installations and encryption policy governance.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation for architecture, processes, and operational procedures.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (Master’s preferred).

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Microsoft 365 Certified: Messaging Administrator Associate
  • Microsoft Certified: Security Administrator Associate
  • Proofpoint Certified Engineer (PCE) or equivalent

Experience

  • 15+ years in enterprise messaging administration and support, with 5+ years in a senior or lead role.
  • Expertise in:
    • Microsoft Exchange Server (2019) and Exchange Online (M365)
    • Office 365 Purview (Compliance Center)
    • Proofpoint Email Security & Archiving Solutions
    • Microsoft 365 Security & Compliance frameworks
  • Strong understanding of SMTP, DNS, SPF/DKIM/DMARC, transport rules, and email routing.
  • Hands-on experience with PowerShell scripting for automation and administration.
  • Experience managing hybrid deployments and large-scale tenant-to-tenant migrations.
  • Familiarity with Intune, Azure AD, and Microsoft Defender for Office 365 is a plus.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex technical projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
