About Us

The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.

Description of Work

Recruitment Range: $120,642 - $130,266

This attorney will perform the most advanced professional legal work with responsibility for handling serious, complex, novel, controversial, high profile and protracted lawsuits at all levels in all courts of the State and the United States. These suits are of major significance to the State and to the jurisprudence of the State and can involve major constitutional issues, public policy concerns or issues that have extreme impact on economic conditions, natural resources or a wide segment of the general public. Over time, this attorney may be assigned cases in varying areas of the law.

This attorney will have direct and independent responsibility for devising and implementing strategy, and tactics for resolving suits in a manner consistent with the policies of the State and the interest of citizens. This attorney, working alone or with other lawyers assigned to represent the State in a given matter, will confer with the Senior Deputy Attorney General in charge of the Special Litigation Division for purposes of marshaling the necessary legal and administrative resources to properly administer cases, and will provide the mature and experienced leadership necessary for their proper and successful handling. This attorney will be responsible for consulting and working with clients in other agencies and with keeping those clients appropriately informed about the status of suits involving them.

This attorney will in particular, and as assigned by supervisors, work with other attorneys in the division or in Legal Services on e-discovery aspects of complex litigation, and will serve as a resource for other attorneys and paralegals on e-discovery issues.

This attorney will be available to consult with and provide litigation guidance and training for other attorneys in the Attorney General’s Office.

This attorney handles criminal briefs on appeal by the defendant to the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court. The attorney reviews the trial transcript, researches applicable law and files the brief in accordance with the Rules of Appellate Procedure. If decisions made by the Court of Appeals are appealed, the attorney follows the matter through to final disposition by the Supreme Court. If a case is selected for oral argument by the Court of Appeals or the Supreme Court, the attorney represents the State at the oral argument.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

1. Significant civil litigation experience.

2. Strong oral and written advocacy skills.

Minimum Education and Experience

Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar and five years of progressively responsible professional legal experience.

NOTE: GS 114-2 and 114-6 make it the duty of the Attorney General of NC to represent the State of North Carolina in all litigation unless another statute specifically states otherwise.
