Our organization

The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

The Information Technology (IT) team is responsible for making sure that the ASC has the appropriate resources necessary to ensure the consistent, reliable and secure delivery of services, and understanding and anticipating the organization’s unique technology requirements.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Infrastructure and Operations, the Senior Systems Administrator will apply technical expertise to the day‑to‑day operation of the ASC’s on‑premises and cloud‑based systems. As the ASC continues to modernize its infrastructure and progress from on-premises systems to cloud based services, this role provides the technical capability to support this transition while maintaining system stability, security and performance.

Key responsibilities include

  • Evaluating current operational practices and contributing to the adoption of improved standards, tooling, and approaches to support the ongoing maturity of ASC’s IT services.
  • Providing technical and operational insight of the infrastructure and cloud roadmap to support the transition from on premises systems to cloud based platforms.
  • Troubleshooting complex infrastructure, application, and integration issues across virtualized environments (Cisco HyperFlex and Nutanix platforms, and Azure).
  • Managing and supporting SQL Server environments (on‑premise and Azure SQL), including administration, high availability configuration, performance tuning, version/release management, availability, and capacity planning.
  • Developing and maintaining scripts and automation (PowerShell, Bash, etc.) to streamline operational tasks and improve reliability.
  • Proactively monitoring systems, identifying risks, and implementing preventative measures to reduce incidents and outages.
  • Ensuring systems are patched, secured, and kept current, on a predetermined schedule, in line with cybersecurity best practices and organizational policies.
  • Supporting, managing, configuring, upgrading, and optimizing commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) applications in use at the ASC, including working directly with vendors to implement system changes, enhancements, and improvements.
  • Acting as a Level 3 escalation point and subject matter expert for complex application issues and working closely with internal teams and vendors to resolve incidents.
  • Delivering technical guidance and mentoring to system administrators and service desk team members and contributing to technical documentation, standards, operational runbooks, and knowledge base articles.
  • Providing operational support and ongoing optimization of Microsoft Purview, working closely with Security, Legal, Privacy, and Records Management teams to support effective data governance, information protection, eDiscovery, and compliance.

The ideal candidate will possess

  • A degree/diploma from a recognized educational institution in the computing field, or related certification and experience.
  • A minimum of eight to 10 years of experience in infrastructure, network, cloud, and general technical support experience in a comparable environment.
  • Hands-on experience administering and troubleshooting virtualized Windows Server environments in an enterprise setting, along with strong knowledge of cloud technologies, particularly Microsoft Azure, and identity integration using Entra ID/Active Directory are required.
  • Experience with Nutanix AHV in production environments, PowerShell scripting for automation and administration, SQL Server administration and query tools including T-SQL, and Microsoft Purview would be considered assets.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills to work collaboratively across teams.
  • Comfort working with vendors and contractors to assist with the implementation and support of network/infrastructure, cloud services, and COTS applications.
