Abbott’s Legal Division is seeking an attorney to assess legal risk and provide strategic guidance on data governance, eDiscovery, emerging technology, and GenAI.

Position Summary

We are seeking an attorney and strategic leader to advise on emerging technologies and their impact on eDiscovery, data retention, and information governance. This role partners with senior business stakeholders and corporate functions to advise on and build a governance strategy around modern data and AI risk.

Key Responsibilities

Qualified candidates will collaborate with stakeholders across all organizational levels and global operations to guide data management and emerging technology initiatives (e.g., GenAI), address legal and eDiscovery implications, and lead the development and execution of governance strategies, including the following responsibilities:

  • Provides strategic guidance on data management, including for eDiscovery and GenAI tools and processes.
  • Monitors caselaw, GenAI developments, and related implications for discoverable information, ESI protocols, and data retention.
  • Drives data management initiatives such as data classification and sensitivity labeling.
  • Analyzes technology and data management issues, including eDiscovery and related legal matters, and develops best practices for enterprise information management.
  • Evaluates the impact of company systems and emerging technologies on data retention, deletion, eDiscovery, and data protection.
  • Identifies technologies to mitigate risk and drive efficiencies across data minimization, retention, sensitivity labeling, auto-classification, GenAI, analytics, and defensible deletion.
  • Develops policy, process and training to support the adoption of Generative AI and advise on its impact on eDiscovery and information governance.
  • Builds strong business relationships by providing practical, responsive support that manages risk and advances business objectives.
  • Advises on and drives unstructured data management and minimization efforts.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains defensible policies, procedures, and practices for enterprise information management in alignment with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Partners with IT stakeholders to expand the use of information management and monitoring tools to identify and prevent data loss.
  • Applies lessons learned from data loss investigations and litigation to develop or update data remediation strategies, process improvements, and best practices.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 7+ years in eDiscovery, data governance, or emerging technologies (such as GenAI) with an understanding of technologies, systems, and processes.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and influence across global organizations.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (required)
  • J.D. (required) with membership in a state bar

Desired Experience / Training:

  • Experience in evaluating and advising on eDiscovery, data retention, as well as Generative AI tools (e.g., M365 Copilot, ChatGPT/OpenAI, and Claude/Anthropic).
  • Prior experience addressing legal and/or technical issues related to the management of information across the enterprise, including but not limited to: (1) unstructured data repositories, (2) structured data in IT systems, and (3) digital content (e.g., mobile, collaboration, and generative AI applications).
  • Skilled in communicating effectively with diverse audiences, including senior management, and managing multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • A strategic thinker who challenges the status quo and can develop an information management vision for the company.
  • Collaborates and works successfully in a diverse team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to keep project documentation and communicate status updates in a timely manner.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, make recommendations, and develop/evaluate/implement complete and creative solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive process improvements, collaboration, and innovation as part of a cross-functional team.

     

The base pay for this position is

$149,300.00 – $298,700.00

In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
