Paralegal III (Litigation Support Technologist Equivalent)

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
Worksite: U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Utah

Position Overview

The Paralegal III serves as a senior-level litigation support professional providing advanced legal and technical assistance to the U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO), District of Utah. This role supports the Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE) division in handling complex, data-intensive civil litigation matters.

This position blends traditional paralegal expertise with litigation technology support, requiring the ability to manage large volumes of electronically stored information (ESI), assist attorneys in case development, and ensure efficient litigation workflows.

Key Responsibilities

Litigation & Case Support

  • Provide comprehensive support across the full litigation lifecycle for civil and criminal matters
  • Draft legal documents, pleadings, and correspondence
  • Summarize reports, case materials, and investigative findings
  • Track court deadlines and ensure timely filings
  • Coordinate pretrial activities, including witness preparation

eDiscovery & Data Management

  • Manage the lifecycle of Electronically Stored Information (ESI), including:
    • Collection, processing, tracking, and production of data
  • Ensure proper handling of metadata and digital evidence
  • Support imaging and document processing protocols

Litigation Technology & Systems Administration

  • Administer and maintain document review platforms (e.g., Relativity, Eclipse)
  • Organize and manage large, complex case databases
  • Collaborate with Automated Litigation Support (ALS) staff

Legal Research & Analysis

  • Conduct advanced legal research using tools such as LexisNexis and Westlaw
  • Analyze case materials, referrals, and electronic records
  • Assist attorneys in evaluating evidence and case strategy

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with attorneys, investigators, and support staff
  • Respond to substantive legal and technical inquiries
  • Maintain clear and professional communication across all levels

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, OR
  • Certified Paralegal (CP) credential strongly preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 3–5+ years of progressive experience in:
    • Litigation support, OR
    • Paralegal work in a fast-paced legal environment

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Advanced knowledge of:
    • Legal terminology
    • Court procedures
    • Litigation lifecycle
  • Strong technical proficiency in:
    • Microsoft Office Suite
    • Adobe Acrobat Professional
    • Legal research platforms (LexisNexis, Westlaw)
    • Litigation support tools (Relativity, Eclipse preferred)
  • Ability to:
    • Manage large, complex datasets and case files
    • Work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
    • Maintain high attention to detail and organization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Security & Compliance Requirements

  • Must be able to:
    • Pass a background investigation (Public Trust level)
    • Meet Department of Justice (DOJ) security requirements
    • Provide proof of U.S. citizenship
  • Must comply with DOJ policies related to:
    • confidentiality
    • data security
    • ethics and conduct

Schedule & Work Hours

  • Full-time: 40 hours per week
  • Workweek: Monday – Friday
  • Typical hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (may vary based on case needs)
  • Work environment: On-site at USAO office
