The City and County of Denver has announced furlough days, or unpaid days off, for most employees to meet a budget shortfall in 2025. There are two fixed furlough days for all limited (temporary positions with an end date) and unlimited (permanent) employees on August 29th, the Friday before Labor Day, and November 28th, the day after Thanksgiving. If you receive an offer for this position, your annual pay will determine whether you are required to take additional furlough days. Location & Schedule

In this position you will work on site at the Office of the Municipal Public Defender, at: 710 W Colfax, Denver CO 80204. This position will be 100% onsite from 8:00AM – 5:00PM with flexible work hours as needed.

Who We Are & What You’ll Do

The Office of the Municipal Public Defender has been in existence since January 1, 2015, and is overseen by the City's Chief Municipal Public Defender. The creation of this office ensures that the City and County of Denver is on the same level with other progressive municipalities providing quality in-house Public Defense services for indigent citizens in the City and County of Denver. The Municipal Public Defender's Office provides legal services to the indigent accused of Denver County who are facing the possibility of jail for traffic offenses, municipal ordinance violations, and specialty courts. We are excited to invite applications for our Paralegal II opening.

The Denver Office of the Municipal Public Defender is seeking Paralegal II applicants. The Paralegal II performs standard/intermediate level paraprofessional legal work assisting attorneys with full-range of legal support work such as research, analysis, drafting various legal documents, client contact, file documentation and providing full-range standard level paralegal assistance. The Office of the Municipal Public Defender is seeking an individual with significant experience in criminal law litigation experience as well as appeals.  The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in providing attorney support through all phases of the litigation process, including trial and post-trial.

As a Paralegal II, you can expect to:

  • Conduct research and studies in order to summarize laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities for use in the preparation of cases, transactional matters, opinions, pleadings, briefs, and other documentation. Investigates the facts of cases and ensures that all relevant information is considered
  • Collect, compile, organize, and analyze various data for use in reports and documentation. Prepares and presents written legal analysis, reports, and recommendations to attorneys 
  • Draft complaints, affidavits, motions, interrogatories, and other pleadings connected with trial preparation and/or discovery
  • Provide paraprofessional legal support services, manages case/matter documentation, facilitates open records requests and/or meetings and assists in transactional cases/matters
  • Assist attorneys at depositions/trials in the preparation of motions, briefs, depositions, and pleadings. Provides immediate research and document retrieval when called upon during trial, provides litigation support to attorneys at depositions/trials, and hearings
  • Assemble and prepares documentation/exhibits based on materials developed during the investigatory/discovery stage, checks legal citations by proofreading for substance and format including conformance with approved standards, and prepares witness and exhibit binders for deposition/trial
  • Assist in administering contract preparation/execution, responds to client inquiries/communications and performs document management
  • Provide support functions for document control, coordinating exhibits and witnesses during trials and hearings, and providing immediate research and documentation retrieval when called upon
  • Organize and tracks case/matter documentation and ensures they are available and easily accessible to attorneys. Files documents in the proper filing system
  • Assist in setting up case or transactional matter files and prepares requests and obtains necessary documentation
  • Prepare exhibits for hearings or transactions and assembles and prepares trial notebooks, exhibits and/or standard closing documents
  • Assist in the preparation and revision of routine contracts and responds to counter proposals and/or related documentations/exhibits. Prepares correspondence and legal documents requiring thorough knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure, Rules of Evidence, legal format, terminology, and procedures
  • Perform lead work such as, provides work instruction, assists employees with difficult/unusual assignments, resolves problems encountered during daily operations and determines appropriate solutions

What You’ll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Possession of a Paralegal Certification at the time of application- preferred not required
  • At least two (2) years of experience with litigation, including handling all aspects of a case through trial and on appeal
  • Knowledge of electronic court filing procedures, including appellate courts
  • Significant trial preparation and trial experience
  • Extensive experience with and demonstrated proficiency with the following:​ ​MS-Word Office 2010, MS-Excel, Adobe-Pro, Westlaw or LexisNexis, Sanction or other trial management software and E-discovery software
  • Proven expertise in cite-checking, legal research, writing and analysis skills
  • Ability to effectively communication with clients, attorneys and other staff members
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail Excellent problem solving skills and ability to work well under pressure A self-starter and team player

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate
  • Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of full-time paralegal experience in a public or private law office, not including internships
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements
  • License/Certifications: Possession of a Paralegal Certification, or be in the process of obtaining a Paralegal Certification
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
