Job Summary
Paralegal position to report up through General Counsel organization in large corporate litigation department of Fortune 500 energy company headquartered in Houston, Texas.
Position Overview
Your responsibilities may include:
- Apply specialized legal knowledge of rules and procedures to assist with matters assigned or overseen by the Deputy General Counsel Litigation and Legal Ops
- Provide paralegal support to attorneys handling a wide range of litigation and arbitration matters
- Assist attorneys with file maintenance, case management plans, docket calendaring, invoice and check processing, and routine communications with internal clients, outside counsel, and others
- Prepare case budgets for review by in-house attorneys and assist with managing the Legal Department’s annual budget, monitoring and analysis of budget against actual spend by matter, and preparing forecast analysis reports
- Assist with running eDiscovery processes and guidelines, including assisting with Legal Hold Order (LHO) compliance, eDiscovery, and department records management
- Assist attorneys with preparing presentations to management including potential exposure reviews, budgets, accruals, etc
Basic/Required:
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Paralegal certificate or equivalent education
- 5 or more years of legal experience working in a law firm and/or corporate legal department
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Liberal Arts or Business or foreign equivalent
- 1 or more years of experience in legal project management (e.g., proactively managing tasks related to legal cases or matters, managing budget and spend, evaluating value of services based on fee arrangements, etc.)
- Intermediate level of proficiency with MS O365 applications: Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, and Teams
- Strong interpersonal skills and effective oral and written communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate attorneys, internal clients, and outside counsel
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Mature judgment and discretion
- Ability to handle and prioritize assignments which may be broad in scope and complexity, and which involve collaborative work with managers and staff within the legal department and in different departments and with varying degrees of seniority
- Self-initiation on regular and complex assignments and ability to work independently within broadly defined objectives, being able to perform job functions with minimal supervision
- Comprehensive analytical, conceptual, problem-solving, planning, evaluation and legal project management skills
- Consistently demonstrates high integrity, behaves ethically, takes ownership of actions and follows through on commitments
- Delivers results through realistic planning to accomplish goals.
- Listens actively and invites dialogue for shared understanding, then influences and acts to drive performance and achieve results
- Builds strong relationships based on trust and seeks collaboration across organizational boundaries to achieve goals
