Position Summary The M365 and Proofpoint Tier 2 Engineer is responsible for advanced support, administration, and troubleshooting of Microsoft 365 services and Proofpoint email security platforms. This role serves as an escalation point for Tier 1 teams, ensuring secure, reliable, and optimized messaging and collaboration environments. The engineer will manage incidents, perform root-cause analysis, maintain system health, and execute service improvements while supporting end users and business operations. Key Responsibilities Microsoft 365 (M365) Administration Provide Tier 2 support for Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, Teams, and related components. Manage and troubleshoot Exchange Online mail flow, transport rules, permissions, shared mailboxes, and distribution groups. Maintain and optimize M365 security and compliance policies (DLP, retention, auditing, Safe Links/Safe Attachments, eDiscovery). Monitor service health, perform incident triage, and implement remediation steps. Proofpoint Administration Provide Tier 2 support for Proofpoint Email Protection, Proofpoint PPS (Protection Server), TAP (Targeted Attack Protection), and Essentials (if applicable). Troubleshoot email delivery issues including quarantines, encryption, email classification, false positives/negatives, and spam/phishing events. Configure Proofpoint rules, filters, policies, DLP, and threat protection settings. Review logs, dashboards, and alerts to identify malicious activity or anomalies. Maintain integrations between Proofpoint and Microsoft 365 (e.g., journaling, connectors, smart hosts). Operational Support & Escalations Serve as escalation point for Tier 1 and assist Tier 3/Engineering teams as needed. Document incidents, resolutions, SOPs, and knowledge base articles. Participate in problem management and root-cause analysis. Support deployment of new features, patches, and upgrades. Collaborate with Security, Compliance, and Infrastructure teams on cross-functional initiatives. Security & Compliance Assist in monitoring and responding to security alerts related to email threats, account compromise, malware, phishing, and spam campaigns. Support investigations and forensics for email-related security incidents. Ensure adherence to organizational and regulatory policies for data protection and retention. Required Qualifications 2–4 years of experience supporting M365, Exchange, or enterprise messaging environments. Hands-on experience with Proofpoint Email Protection or similar enterprise email security platforms. Strong understanding of email protocols (SMTP, SPF, DKIM, DMARC). Experience with Entra ID (Azure AD), identity lifecycle, group management, and conditional access. Ability to troubleshoot complex mail flow, security alerts, and configuration issues. Familiarity with PowerShell for automation and administrative tasks. Excellent analytical, communication, and documentation skills. Preferred Qualifications Microsoft certifications (MS-102, MS-500, AZ-104, etc.). Proofpoint PPS, TAP, or Essentials certifications. Knowledge of ITIL processes and ticketing systems (ServiceNow, Jira, etc.). Experience with email migrations or hybrid Exchange environments. Soft Skills Strong problem-solving and investigative mindset. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Customer service orientation and ability to communicate with non-technical users. Flexibility to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and handle escalations professionally.
