Your Role
The Counsel – Litigation executes litigation strategy for Baxter’s businesses, regions and functions. Implements the company’s legal strategies, spearheads pre-dispute and litigation efforts. Advises and counsels the company’s senior management on legal and related matters pertinent to various business units and corporate functions. What you'll be doing
Assists in handling litigation matters and internal investigations as appropriate.
Understands the strategic and tactical objectives of Baxter’s businesses and/or functions, and the associated legal and litigation implications.
Collaborates on pre-dispute and litigation strategy.
Participates in articulation of the Litigation team’s goals and supports strategies for operational management of the Legal Department.
Participates as a strategic partner for Business and Commercial teams to limit litigation risk; finds opportunities and suggests/implements solutions for better practices regarding structure, systems and delivery of services.
Establishes positive relationships with Internal and external constituents; has responsibility for relationships with outside legal firms.
Accountable for keeping the Associate and Deputy General Counsels, Business Leadership Teams, and members of the Legal Department informed of litigation matters, as appropriate.
Participates in maintaining a strong and cohesive team.
Takes ownership for team actions, efforts and outcomes.
Works with other pertinent members of the Legal Department to put together cross departmental teams to address complex issues.
What you'll bring
JD or international equivalent from a nationally or internationally recognized institution.
Minimum of five years of demonstrated professional experience, including some experience in a corporate environment with a high level of complexity.
Experience in addressing multinational legal issues. Experience in the medical device and/or pharmaceutical industries preferred but not required.
Significant experience defending federal and state litigation, including False Claims Act, securities, antitrust, and environmental cases, products liability and commercial disputes, and responding to state and federal enforcement actions.
Significant experience counseling business clients with respect to litigation risk across full spectrum of state and federal law.
Ability to function in a high-paced legal environment and to proactively develop strategies to ensure efficient and effective counsel.
Prior experience in disputes and government investigations outside the United States preferred.
Ability to develop and improve e-Discovery policies and procedures in face of changing technological landscape.
Experience working with the senior management team to limit legal and compliance risks.
Experience with law firm and vendor budgets, including alternative fee arrangement structures.
Ability to effectively develop key partnership with clients and other individuals.
Ability to train other professionals, including on attorney-client privilege, e-Discovery, and other related legal topics.
Experience counseling clients in healthcare (medical products, biologics, and/or pharmaceutical) environment is helpful.
Demonstrated ability to be a strategic partner to the Law Department and Business, Function and Commercial leadership teams.
Consistent and broad achievement of the Law Department’s Professional Standards, including critical thinking, good judgment, the ability to view issues holistically, and being a genuine teammate that willingly collaborates, mentors and can take on additional and varied responsibilities as business needs dictate.

At Baxter, we are committed to equitable pay for all employees, and we strive to be more transparent with our pay practices. The estimated base salary for this position is $192,000- $240,000 annually. The estimated range is meant to reflect an anticipated salary range for the position. We may pay more or less than of the anticipated range based upon market data and other factors, all of which are subject to change. Individual pay is based on upon location, skills and expertise, experience, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, commission, and/or long-term incentive.
