Certificates are a popular means of improving your resume in the world of e-Discovery. When looking on LinkedIn, you will notice that many eDiscovery professionals certify in at least one specialty. Whether it’s a vendor-agnostic course like ACED’s eDiscovery specialist, or the challenging Relativity Certified Administrator, you will certainly enjoy the advantages of getting certified!
We’ve scoured the web for every single certificate which is currently available in eDiscovery and have created an overview with what we consider the most essential aspects of every certificate exam or course:
You will notice that it’s quite hard to compare the certificates with one another. For example, some certificates might require a 3-day course, while others will allow you to take the exam without any mandatory prerequisites. The pricing is also wildly different, ranging from tens to thousands of dollars.
The purpose of this page is, therefore, not to compare certificates one-on-one but for you to get a full overview of what’s out there for the eDiscovery tools that you use on a daily basis, and your amount of experience in the industry.
This article is made for informational purposes and might contain outdated or incorrect information. We will try our best to keep every certification up to date with the latest information available. If you find any inaccuracies or if you notice any missing eDiscovery certificates, Please send us a message by using the contact form or leaving a comment at the bottom of the article. We are happy to include any new certification limited to the world of eDiscovery. New submissions will be approved per eDiscovery.jobs’ discretion.
Information in the ‘Certificate overview” section for each certificate is intended to be factual. The company/vendor and certificate description can contain the personal opinion of the writers of this article. In any case, please let us know if you find any inaccuracies.
Thank you, and enjoy the article!

We kick off the overview with two institutes that offer certification, which is not tied to a specific vendor or software, but seek to improve your general eDiscovery skill-set: ACEDS and Arkfeld’s EDEC.
ACEDS (A BARBRI Professional Association) is a member organization for e-discovery professionals. The organization is vendor-neutral and has no commercial or financial ties. The membership for eDiscovery professionals includes, among other perks, a mentorship program and live webinars.
The ACEDS Certified E-Discovery Specialist exam is one of the most popular certificates in E-Discovery. For good reasons, as nearly 40 experts have collaborated to construct one of the most challenging exams in eDiscovery! In may 2021, a Canadian version has launched in Beta.
Since 2018, ACEDS offers a new certificate designed for e-Discovery professionals at all levels: The eDiscovery Executive Certificate.
In 2021, ACEDS together with the National Society of Legal Technology introduced a new training and certificate called the “eDiscovery Technology Certificate” (eDTech). This new training program provides law students and legal professionals with an interactive exploration of e-Discovery technology solutions
The ACEDS ‘CEDS’ certificate is the first independent e-discovery certification program and covers a wide range of subjects, including: project planning, litigation hold, implementation, processing, and review.
Since 2010 the certificate has been one of the most popular exams to take and is definitely a worthwhile addition to your resume.
The exam is considered quite a challenge, with a passing grade of 66.4%, so make sure to prepare well by studying the materials and viewing the three 90-minute webinars planned every quarter.
Now in Beta with a 50% discount!
Beginning in May 2021, ACEDS is launching its flagship Certified E-Discovery Specialist (CEDS) exam and training program in Canada. Initially, ACEDS will offer a beta exam through August 1st, with substantially discounted rates for the training and certification exam.
The beta exam is the final critical step in the development of the CEDS Canada exam, which will launch later this year. Beta exam participants will take an extended-time exam with 160-170 questions. Once the beta exam closes in August, the results will undergo full statistical analysis. At the completion of the analysis, questions for the final exam are selected and a cut score will be established. Beta participants are graded using the same questions and passing score as the final version of the exam.
The beta exam is necessary to comply with industry standards for certification credentialing. This “testing of the test” will ensure that the CEDS Canada exam meets the same high standards ACEDS has had for the CEDS certification for over ten years.
The EDEx exam is a relatively new exam by ACEDS, created in 2018. The exam is obtainable for legal professionals on every level with the intention to educate beginners and professional who wish to broaden their knowledge
The exam includes a mandatory 12-plus hour ‘eDiscovery essentials’ course of interactive online training and several lectures on advanced subjects, offering you an economical way to get your first steps in eDiscovery!
The EDTech training and certification program is a collaboration of ACEDS, NSLT, and about 9 eDiscovery software vendors.
The training aims to expose the eDiscovery student and professional to a variety of tools and applications, offering a unique hands-on experience.
One of the ideas behind this training is that professionals often don't utilize all the tools available for their craft.
With this practical training you will certainly become a well-rounded eDiscovery professional!
