VP, Assistant General Counsel – Discovery – Information Governance

The Legal Discovery Management (LDM) team within the Litigation Department advises and coordinates on the discovery process with internal counsel, external law firms, and service providers in connection with JPMC’s litigation matters, regulatory inquiries, and investigations.  The VP, Assistant General Counsel manages projects and initiatives related to firmwide information governance initiatives.

The successful candidate will be responsible for advising on legal preservation obligations and mitigating risks associated with discovery strategy, record retention, and the needs of the individual lines of business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise business partners, internal and external counsel, and LDM on legal hold/preservation obligations throughout the information management lifecycle
  • Counsel records management and information governance steering committees by providing legal expertise about eDiscovery processes and risks
  • Navigate and partner with various areas of the Firm, including Risk Management, Information Technology, Compliance, Privacy, and LOB representatives, to create, refine and implement controls, processes, and business requirements related to eDiscovery
  • Create and present educational/training sessions to internal stakeholders on the preservation process and importance of preserving Firm data for legal matters
  • Develop and maintain written guidance, including policies and procedures, on eDiscovery obligations
  • Improve legal defensibility of discovery processes and enhance LDM’s ability to mitigate discovery risks by gaining additional visibility into the Firm’s data footprint/data sources
  • Field ad hoc inquiries from stakeholders and internal and external counsel to facilitate compliance with record retention requirements as related to legal holds, including data disposition
  • Create innovative and defensible solutions to complex business questions and challenges
  • Keep current on legal developments related to information governance and discovery

Required Skills:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Admitted to practice and member of the bar in good standing in the state in which the attorney will be based
  • Minimum of 5 years litigation experience with a focus on discovery at a law firm or corporate law department
  • Efficiently and effectively manage competing priorities and projects
  • Be a team player that can collaborate with others but also function well independently
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills; capable of communicating effectively to diverse audiences as well as senior management
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience and interest in all facets of discovery including, eDiscovery, records management, information governance and defensible disposition
  • Background in process improvement
