The Opportunity

Key Responsibilities and Relationships

The Senior Manager, eDiscovery (“Senior Manager”) will fulfil a senior strategic role delivering eDiscovery services and client-facing leadership for the firm’s Digital Legal Delivery business, reporting to the Head of eDiscovery (UK, US & EMEA) and Associate Director, Legal Technology, UK, US & EMEA). This will include having responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Digital eDiscovery team in the region with the other Senior Manager in eDiscovery. This is a fee-earning role and there will be a billable hours target of 3 hours per day.

The Senior Manager will work with the Regional Disputes senior teams and the Head of Disputes, to lead the legal and e-Discovery teams within Digital to high professional standards, with a close eye on quality.

They will also work closely with the senior eDiscovery team members in Asia and Australia to ensure global alignment to best achieve the strategic aims of the global business and to support matters around the globe.

Clients/ Business Development

  • Establish and maintain excellent working relationships with the local GHoPs, RHoPs, Partners and CRMs across the London office. Promote the full eDiscovery offering to them, in consultation and collaboration with relevant peer(s), to maximise the opportunity for the firm’s clients to benefit from Digital Legal Delivery services.
  • Support the Head of eDiscovery and Associate Director, Legal Technology with projects that develop new business in the region.
  • Direct excellent client care and relationship management of internal and, where appropriate, external clients to ensure high levels of satisfaction with the legal services offered by the eDiscovery practice in the region.
  • Contribute substantially to the firm’s overall value proposition and high standards of service delivery to Clients, assessed by Client survey/feedback and repeat business as appropriate.

Legal Technology

  • Support the ALT Technology Roadmap programme in West.
  • Continue to maximise the volume of data processed and hosted in our cloud platform.
  • Build own brand as a respected subject matter expert in the legal technology community through seeking opportunities to raise own profile and others in the team (both internally and externally)

Reporting

Proactive, timely and accurate reporting to the AD on performance in the region in respect of:

  • Utilisation
  • Matter WIP
  • Accurate (but strategic) cost estimates and matter budgeting
  • Resourcing/recruitment including recommendations
  • People/HR/Team management issues
  • Work and Pipeline
  • Business Development Opportunities
  • Matter management (including any quality issues)

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide inspired leadership and clear direction to teams ensuring a collaborative approach to achieve the firm’s objectives and promote a positive perception of HSF and ALT to clients.
  • Lead and develop a culture within eDiscovery to support the attraction, development, performance and retention of the highest calibre employees.
  • Develop a highly regarded team that strives to consistently deliver exceptional work results by:
  • Guiding, directing and evaluating the work of direct reports, empowering the team to fulfil their obligations across the firm.
  • Effective performance management of direct reports and other team members as appropriate.  
  • Managing the escalation of issues from Manager(s) on work being carried out in the region.
  • Ensuring all members of the team are engaged, motivated and performing effectively with appropriate support.
  • Ensuring the teams within the portfolio enhance the firm’s brand in their interactions with legal teams and clients.
  • Proactively seeking feedback from all members of the team on the training needs of those in the team and facilitating required training.
  • Achieve high levels of employee engagement across teams within the portfolio and evidenced by 360 feedback.
  • Manage change as it impacts the teams in a way that minimises operational and client delivery disruption.

Financial Management

  • Support the AD to achieve revenue growth while maintaining strong margins, with specific revenue and margin targets to be set on an annual basis by the ALT Executive.
  • Ensure delivery against agreed revenue and profitability targets and provide regular updates to the AD. Ensure profitability of the ALT business within the region through rigorous management of costs.
  • Support the AD to innovate in the design of pricing solutions and proposals for client work to win business and maximise business growth; and keep methodology and approach to pricing constantly under review with reference to KPIs.
  • Provide pricing models and cost estimates to the AD, working with the ALT finance team and the HSF pricing team.
  • Ensure global alignment to agreed principles and compliance with financial disciplines.

Risk Management

  • Ensure the business is aware of potential risks and that appropriate risk assessment is part of the process for taking on new work, using new technology, or using technology in new ways.
  • Comply with risk management obligations and responsibilities in accordance with the requirements for this role as set out on the intranet.
  • Comply with WHS obligations and responsibilities in accordance with the requirements of the role.

Qualifications, skills and experience
 

  • Have a track record of successfully leading an eDiscovery team. An ability to help deliver a high performance culture among a group of diverse, talented, technically excellent individuals will be crucial.
  • Be a process-minded individual, demonstrating excellence in client service delivery for both internal legal teams and external clients, including managing the processes and delivery of work.
  • Extensive experience of planning and managing complex eDiscovery matters and deep experience with eDiscovery         technology (Relativity and Nuix desired), and eDiscovery review “best practice”, including the application and analysis of eDiscovery Analytics (TAR, Early Case Assessment, Clustering, Concept searching).
  • Excellent understanding of the eDiscovery software market and the legal framework of eDiscovery, existing protocols, practices and relevant legal standards. 
  • Proven skills in operational business growth and planning, able to spot and develop new business opportunities.
  • People management skills in a law firm or commercial legal environment managing team members in and out of region.
  • Experience of resourcing, project managing and motivating large teams to tight deadlines.
  • High level of attention to detail with the ability to step back and see problems, opportunities and trends.
  • Strong creative and analytical ability, coupled with sound judgement to balance multiple factors and solve complex problems.
  • Strong IT literacy, including and aptitude for learning (and becoming proficient in) the use of new and innovative software and IT applications.
