Duties and Responsibilities:

The Senior Paralegal is responsible for directly and independently supporting one or more AUSAs by providing a wide variety of technical paralegal services, particularly in Affirmative Civil Enforecment (ACE) investigations and trials.

  • The work requires a sound working knowledge of the legal system, civil litigation, civil discovery, legal research procedures and sources of information.
  • The work will also require organization and management of substantial quantities of records, documents, data and discovery.
  • The work may also require financial analyses and investigation of various individuals and organizations. 
  • Seeks information, and locates new sources of information, in aid of ACE investigations and trials through contacts or correspondence with other departments and/or agencies of federal, state and local government, witnesses and counsel for targets/defendants. 
  • Gathers factual material independently; reads, annotates, and summarizes transcripts, files and other factual aspects of the case; obtains financial and statistical information, agency records, court records and other public records; analyzes documents, and drafts factual memoranda. 
  • Reviews and analyzes the financial and management operations of a variety of organizations. Gathers and examines a wide array of financial documents obtained from a variety of sources, including financial statements, billing records, invoices, data  processing material, bank records, and  other documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to review a wide variety of documents, both legal and non-legal documents, including Motions and briefs, and a variety of legal correspondence.
  • Provides critical assistance in trial preparations. 
  • Reviews and analyzes various health care records, including hospital records, billing records, Medicaid or Medicare data, and other ACE- related records.
  • Skill in analysis, investigation, judgment, advice, and assistance in financial fraud investigations and cases, and the preparation and presentation of oral and written financial reports to AUSAs, judges and juries.
  • Assists in preparing discovery requests and organizing and analyzing discovery responses.
  • Drafts correspondence and legal documents for ACE attorney(s) signature. Drafts proposed orders and decrees for signature of judges and magistrates.
  • Performs specialized detailed legal research as necessary to Lexis/Nexus and West Law.
  • Responsible for organizing and processing large quantities of records, data and discovery documents.
  • Responsible for preparing numerous exhibits for trial.
  • Ability to use MS Excel; MS Outlook; MS Access, Acumen, STARS and/or other data bases; Word Perfect; Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat Professional.
  • Provides automated litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and courtroom presentations.
  • Utilizes various software applications and graphics hardware such as scanners and plotters. 
  • Prepares documents, charts, and visual materials for use in trials.
  • Provides technical support (e.g., enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits). 

           

More About the Role

  • Works under the direction of a Supervisory Paralegal or a Project Supervisor.  Work products are reviewed prior to submission; however, often develops these products with minimal direct supervision other than written guidelines. 
  • In addition to functions performed by Paralegals, described below, performs moderately complex legal research; synopsizes transcripts of hearings and oral arguments for attorney use; reviews case related materials and, for example, identifies potentially conflicting statements or areas requiring further investigation; writes preliminary drafts of simple legal memoranda and correspondence. 
  • Contact mostly with other Contractor staff, but occasional contact with trial staff may be required.

You’ll Bring These Qualifications

  • Requires paralegal certificate, or JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study, or an equivalent level of legal training or experience; or an equivalent level of education may be substituted.
  • Additionally at least two years of litigation paralegal experience or project experience (as related to the task order) is required. 
  • At least one year of experience in automated litigation support. 
  • Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources. 
  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw. 
  • Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems. 
  • Role also requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources. 
  • Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important. 
  • DOJ MBI must be obtainable (US Citizenship required).

Pay Range:

This posting is for a position covered by the Service Contract Labor Standards (SCA). The pay and benefits provided for this position will meet or exceed the minimum required amounts detailed in the wage determination issued by the Department of Labor and made applicable to this position, as incorporated into CACI’s government contract for the work location.
 

Minimum Required Hourly Wage:

$25.39
